Blog Post: Why feedback often goes wrong — and what to do instead

December 6, 2024

Linking a favorite article, The Feedback Fallacy, that I recently shared with a client executive team. The main idea:  “We excel only when people who know us and care about us tell us what they experience and what they feel, and in particular when they see something within us that really works.”

So, what do we do with this?

❤️ Continue to invest in relationships. Feedback is far more likely to be effective when delivered in the spirit of “I care about you.”

🌟 Praise what is working well and dig into specifics of what you see and experience.

⚠ When sharing constructive feedback…
* Be specific about what you see and experience
* Avoid labels and generalizations
* Keep in mind: “Feedback” is not the same thing as giving “instruction” about how to follow a procedure. If proper steps are known and can be measured objectively (e.g. consider a checklist in an operating room), be very direct about what someone needs to do differently

🌱 To help people grow, encourage employees to think about how they have tackled things in the past, and guide them to apply those strategies to their next challenge

Do you agree? What has been your own experience with feedback?
